Speakers

We're very excited to have several featured speakers whose experience around different aspects of software preservation and emulation will enrich the workshop experience.

Laura Drake Davis

Laura Drake Davis is a Digital Specialist at the Library of Congress in the Moving Image Section. In this role, Laura processes born-digital moving image content, develops workflows for born-digital content and develops strategies for capturing and transforming metadata. Laura brings a wide range of experience to this role, with previous positions in digital collections, university archives, performing arts special collections, and state government archives. A certified archivist since 2007, Laura holds the Master of Library Science degree from the University of Maryland College Park and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of California Santa Barbara.

Dave Gibson

David Gibson is a Processing Technician in the Library of Congress Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division. He was a member of the inaugural class of UCLA's Moving Image Archive Studies Master's program, earning his degree in 2004. In 2006, he began working with the Library of Congress' video game collections and continues to perform cataloging, preservation and outreach activities in an effort to build the collection and to increase awareness of the processes involved in preserving complex digital objects.

Julia Kim

Julia Kim is the Digital Assets Specialist at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. She manages the division's born-digital and digitized assets, workflows, and systems. She has published and presented on audiovisual workflows, digital forensics and emulation use cases, researcher access to born-digital collections, and at-scale digital access workflows. She helped cofound the XFR Collective, a nonprofit organization focused on the preservation of at-risk media, and is a New York National Digital Stewardship Program alumna.

Brandon Butler

Brandon Butler is the Director of Information Policy at UVA Library, where he provides guidance and education to the Library and its user community on intellectual property and related issues, and advocates on the Library's behalf. Brandon is also the Software Preservation Network Legal & Policy Consultant, where he oversees SPN's policy agenda and legal strategy for securing lawful preservation, sharing and reuse of software. He received his J.D. from the UVA School of Law in 2008.
